THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND

We believe that it's possible to offer beautiful and durable products without compromising the planet or the people involved in production.

Brain and Breath is a brand proudly designed and crafted in Portugal, with a strong commitment to sustainability and the responsible use of resources. Our collections are made using natural fibers such as cotton and linen, but what truly sets us apart is our innovative approach to sourcing materials. We carefully select high-quality fabrics from deadstock and leftovers from Portugal’s luxury home textiles and fashion industries—remnants that would otherwise go to waste. By giving a second life to these fabrics, we turn surplus into stylish, comfortable homewear and loungewear pieces that are both durable and timeless.

Our mission is to reduce textile waste while supporting traditional craftsmanship. Portugal's rich history in the textile sector allows us to work closely with local artisans and small-scale producers who use their skills to transform these unused materials into beautiful, eco-conscious designs. Each piece you wear from Brain and Breath carries the story of rescued fabrics, with the added value of being made in a country renowned for its quality and ethical practices. Through this, we aim to promote mindful consumption and encourage our customers to choose products that respect both people and the planet.

We love design. We love the future.

A Story of Sustainability and Textile Innovation in Northern Portugal

After 30 years of working as a designer within the Portuguese textile industry and witnessing the immeasurable textile waste and deadstock, a certain discomfort settled in, as if I were on the wrong side of history. Environmental concerns and social responsibility simply didn't coexist with the market's demands, especially in terms of quality and price parameters. We all know how challenging it is to get things right from the start, and how market demands often lead to experimentation. The result inevitably leads to an enormous amount of fabrics and knits, or even kilograms of yarn that seem to serve no other purpose and are destined for recycling or even the trash. With this baggage and more, the idea of repurposing what the market no longer wants or needs was born. This is how Brain and Breath came to be. "Brain" implies rethinking, and "Breath" signifies the need to take a step back.

The world of fashion is inherently demanding and consumer-driven, and consequently, it's often anything but ecological. My background is in fashion. When we're confronted with the speed, the need for constant change, and the allure of a moment's satisfaction, we realize how far removed we are from reality, from the rhythms of nature, and ultimately, from our physical existence.

During the pandemic, with the fortune of experiencing quarantine in a home by the sea, in close contact with nature, I was forced to take notice, to look, and to feel the pulse of life. I finally saw the plastic that washed up on the beach every day, brought in by the sea, and the wear and tear it endured. This wear and tear revealed the countless microscopic particles it left behind in the water. I read scientific articles on the subject. With knowledge of natural and synthetic fibers and their transformation, and empirical knowledge of the wear and tear our clothing undergoes due to the treatments we subject them to, I rethought the reuse of textile surplus with synthetic components. I decided that Brain and Breath could not contribute any further to the proliferation of microplastics in the oceans. Therefore, in everything we produce, we only use what is strictly necessary (recycled polyester threads, when unavoidable, for sewing or embroidery).

The growth of the textile industry in Portugal is a valuable asset to the national economy, and, in addition to reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation, this is also why Brain and Breath only selects domestic partners. Portugal knows how to make things, and it knows how to make them well. We work with small clothing companies, creating synergies and mutual understanding based on a win-win principle.

We've chosen a national dye house as a partner that meets all sustainability requirements in the sector, currently contributing to a 70% reduction in CO₂ emissions.

Our paper labels are produced in Portugal and certified.

Brain and Breath is much more than a product brand. We want to be a story of sustainability, innovation, and respect for our planet. With deep roots in Portugal, our journey is fueled by a passion for design and quality, and a commitment to ecological practices.

We've included colorful and traditional table mats from the North of Portugal, wooden spoons and black clay pieces from the center of Portugal. Some of our pieces are one-of-a-kind and produced by our designer using the slow living concept, utilizing traditional techniques such as handloom weaving or the tuffting technique, or even by the hands of her mother in crochet pieces, which reflect the love and dedication we put into each creation.
